Course Description:

This engaging, hands-on class takes students on a journey through history using archaeology—including Biblical archaeology. With an emphasis on FUN, students will explore past archeological cultures and empires by examining what they left behind, while growing in understanding and thinking deeply about the Bible. Led by Mrs. Greene, a Biblical archaeologist with a passion for sharing her knowledge, the class will help students “dig” into the Bible by analyzing the text for “clues.” Archaeology is really a form of skilled detective work, and through the use of geography, scholarly articles, ancient recipes (we will cook!), chronology (among other topics!), students will learn first-hand about the archaeological approach as it intersects with the fascinating world of the Bible bringing history to life. Students will even have the opportunity to participate in an archaeological dig right here in the Houston area, as well as a trip to the Hall of Egyptology at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

A note from the teacher: Hi, this is Irene. I am writing this in the first person because this class is so near and dear to my heart! I am so excited to bring the world of archaeology to your precious child. He or she is growing a lot during this age (6th-12th grade) and identity is developing more than any other time in life. It is my desire to instill a true love of the Bible through the lens of biblical archaeology. This class will teach skills as well: apologetics, rational thinking and a critical eye for detail. Maps and geography will also be applied.

This year we will explore: mummies; languages such as Biblical Hebrew, Akkadian and Hieroglyphs; The Shroud of Turin; The Ark of the Covenant; Who were the Wise Men?; stone tools; making ancient recipes found on clay tablets; and so much more!
