Course Description:

This class is designed to build on the skills developed in ASL 1. The class will help students continue to gain knowledge of ASL vocabulary while learning to apply that vocabulary to engage in intermediate level conversations in American Sign Language. In addition to vocabulary, this class will also focus on advancing fingerspelling skills, learning advanced number concepts, advancing knowledge of ASL grammatical structure through gloss, and learning more about Deaf culture. We will be utilizing the textbooks listed below along with videos from Learn How to Sign (a Christian-based signing channel on YouTube), LifePrint, articles on Deaf culture and important Deaf figures in history, games, and class discussions. As ASL is a language and language acquisition takes daily practice, there will be weekly homework in this class to help students continue to practice and improve their skills outside of class time.
Students will sometimes be given outside of class assignments that will require them to watch movies on important Deaf topics. I will let you know what format or streaming platform you can find these on. They will also be assigned a book report and given a list of books to choose from in the second semester. This may have to be purchased if you cannot find them at the local library.

Upon completion, this class will equal One Foreign Language Credit on a HS Transcript. American Sign Language is recognized as a foreign language in the state of Texas and satisfies Texas State requirements for graduation.
