Course Description:
This class is a combination health and Physical Education course. We will spend approximately 30-40 minutes on health, nutrition, and safety topics each week and the remainder of the class engaged in physical activity. The health portion of the class is designed to introduce the students to various topics including why health and nutrition are important and how our everyday choices can affect us physically and mentally in both the short and long term. We will be covering topics such as the components of nutrition, exercise, musculoskeletal anatomy, mental health and ways to improve it, and basic first aid. The class will utilize PowerPoint presentations, scientific articles, guided notes, and class discussions rather than a traditional textbook. As a big part of the focus of this class is increasing student awareness about their daily choices and impacts on health, students will be asked to track their diet and activity levels at various times throughout the year.
The PE portion of class will be a structured class with units focused on the various pillars of fitness including: strength, mobility, flexibility, endurance, speed, and agility. Each pillar will be covered in units of 3-5 weeks with planned activities that focus on assessing and improving each of these areas.
Expectations: Mrs. Hill expects every student to participate in all activities to the best of his/her ability. We fully understand there is a wide range of skill levels when it comes to physical fitness. Mrs. Hill will do her best to support and challenge every student according to his/her capabilities.
Upon completion, this class will equal 1/2 Credit for P.E. AND 1/2 Credit for Health/Nutrition on HS Transcript
